About All On 4 Dental Implants

If you're missing multiple teeth, you may have considered dentures or bridges as a solution. However, there's another option that offers greater stability and comfort: implant-supported dentures. These dentures are secured by dental implants, which are surgically placed into the jawbone to provide support for the dentures.

Implant-supported dentures have several advantages over traditional dentures and bridges. They offer greater stability, allowing you to eat and talk with confidence. They're also more comfortable, as they don't put pressure on your gums like traditional dentures do. Additionally, they look and feel more like natural teeth, which can improve your self-confidence.

If you're considering implant-supported dentures, it's important to understand the procedure and what to expect.

Procedure:

The implant process involves several steps. First, your dentist will place the implants into your jawbone. These implants are typically made of titanium and are designed to fuse with your jawbone over time. After the implants are placed, there is a healing period of several months while the implant fuses with the bone. Once the implants have fused with the bone, your dentist will attach abutments to the implants. These abutments serve as connectors between the implants and the dentures. Finally, your dentist will place the dentures onto the abutments, securing them in place.

Types of implants used:

There are two types of implants used for implant-supported dentures: endosteal and subperiosteal. Endosteal implants are placed directly into the jawbone, while subperiosteal implants are placed on top of the jawbone but underneath the gum tissue. Your dentist will determine which type of implant is best for your specific needs.

Number of appointments required:

The number of appointments required for implant-supported dentures varies depending on each patient's individual needs. Typically, the placement of the implants requires two to three appointments. The first appointment is for the initial consultation and implant placement, and the second appointment is for the placement of the abutments. Once the implants have healed and fused with the bone, there is a final appointment to place the dentures.

What to expect during and after surgery:

During the implant placement surgery, you will be given anesthesia to ensure your comfort. After the surgery, you may experience some discomfort and swelling. Your dentist may prescribe pain medication and recommend that you rest for a few days. You'll also need to be careful when eating to avoid disturbing the implants.

Recovery process and timeline:

The recovery process for implant-supported dentures can take several months, as the implants need time to fuse with the bone. During this time, you'll need to avoid hard or chewy foods and follow a soft-food diet recommended by your dentist. Your dentist will monitor your progress and let you know when you're able to resume your normal diet.

Maintenance and Care:

Proper oral hygiene is essential for the long-term success of your implant-supported dentures. It's important to brush your dentures and gums twice a day, floss daily, and use an antiseptic mouthwash regularly. Your dentist may recommend a special brush for cleaning your dentures. You'll also need to visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.

Potential Risks and Complications:

Like any surgery, there are risks associated with implant-supported dentures. These include infection, implant failure, and damage to surrounding teeth and gums. To minimize these risks, it's important to choose an experienced dentist and follow all pre- and post-operative instructions.

Cost and Insurance:

The cost of implant-supported dentures varies depending on several factors, including the number of implants, the type of implant, and the complexity of the surgery. Insurance coverage for implant-supported dentures varies by plan, so it's important to check with your provider to see what's covered. Financing options may be available to help make the procedure more affordable.

Benefits:

The benefits of implant-supported dentures are numerous. They offer improved chewing and speaking ability, as well as a positive impact on overall oral and general health. They also provide renewed self-confidence and a greater quality of life.

Conclusion:

Implant-supported dentures are a great option for those missing multiple teeth. They offer several advantages over traditional dentures and bridges, including greater stability, comfort, and a natural look and feel. If you're considering implant-supported dentures, talk to your dentist to learn more about the procedure and how it can benefit you. We hope this post has provided you with all the information you need to make an informed decision about implant-supported dentures.
